poetry

There are many artists, musicians, and actors in Sasoho who also have an interest in poetry. Some studios have planned or impromptu poetry readings. Two venues have scheduled poetry readings.

On Thursday nights, Misfit #9 in the basement of the Santora Building hosts a poetry reading. Sign-ups to read are at 9:15 PM. This time is shared with musicians, and the mix between poets and musicians varies from week to week. The readings have been averaging about 15 acts a night. They are held in the common area of the basement and have been beginning at 10:30 PM. The event starts late because many of the poets are students and don't get out of class until late. The readings usually last a few hours. With summer coming, plans are to start the readings earlier in the evening.

On Tuesday nights, Lights of Theatre on the second floor of the Spurgeon Building is the spot for poets. It is an intimate venue. This small theatre seats only about 10 people, so you may end up standing. The stage is also small. It is called "the black box," by its creators. In the photo to the left, Alex is on the stage. If you read here, you get to sign the guitar! For musicians and music fans, the theatre also brings in five bands once a month for an evening of music.

Lights of Theatre Production Studios

Alex Reyes is the creator of Lights of Theatre Production Studios. The guitar that Alex is sitting with has been signed by all of the poets and musicians that have touched it while on the stage. It is an old Orlando guitar with one of the tuning keys missing. Alex says that the missing key doesn't seem to bother those who try to play it. They find a way to tune it, using a pair of pliers or whatever they can find. The Theatre of Lights hosts poetry readings on Tuesday nights.
