The Spurgeon Building

206 W. Fourth St.

Elizabeth Burnett (above, left) and Sarah Brawner (above, right) are two of the Spurgeon artists on the fourth floor. Elizabeth and others organize events for the colony. In May a contest was held with a theme based on the artist's rendition of Absolut art. A large studio was opened up and all the works were shown during the Art Walk. Vistors to the exhibition voted for their favorite piece.

Pictured to the left, the Spurgeon building is the third building to occupy its present site. The first was built in 1875 and the second followed ten years later. The second building had an opera house on the second floor. The four story building that we see today was built in 1913. The picture to the left is of the neoclassic Swiss clock tower. The clock stopped working due to the earthquake in 1933. In the late 1990's, Tim Rush, a citizen of north Santa Ana and a member of the Orange County Chapter of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) raised over $200,000 for its repair. Its tunes once again fill the air in downtown Santa Ana. Currently, the first floor of the Spurgeon building is retail shops. The entrance to the Spurgeon Artists Colony is nestled between these shops. Over 50 art related entities rent space in the rooms of the top three floors of the building. There is even a small theatre on the second floor that hosts poetry readings on Tuesday nights.

In the picure to the top right, we are looking over the shoulder of Nancy Marlow of Fictious Studio as she works on a cubist creation. Nancy shares a studio with poet Nanette Wright, who sometimes colaborates with her, writing poems for her paintings. Nancy is also a fourth floor artist, along with Elizabeth Burnett, Sarah Brawner, and Jeane Coutts. (One of Jeane's pieces appears in the information page of this website). The picture on the bottom right is Nancy's latest work. It was inspired by "Cheval," the equestrian extravaganza that recently had a tour stop at the Orange County Fairgrounds.
The piece to the left was painted by Ivy Torres. It appeared in the Midpoint Exhibition which was held during the last Art Walk on June 1st. The exhibition was organized by Imaginary Studio in association with Jigsaw Arts, and featured the works of emerging artists: David Calderon, Ivy Torres, Tim Johnson, *Nicole*, Qiao Hua Burkhart, and Ricardo Miranda. The show was held in the Black Box Gallery, located in the center of the second floor.
